How did this come about?
2002; 2 years after our son was born, my favorite jeans (I bought at a vintage store) no longer fit and I didn't want to let it go. Since I adore purses, I thought, why not make it into one. That way it's functional and it will still be as stylish ever. Later that week, after I couldn't stop thinking about the idea, I asked my mother-in-law to teach me to string the sewing machine. With the 2 decade old Singer she had in the garage, I started to sew my very first piece. After a hand full of broken needles, many compliments of that first custom-made purse and requests to make more; I found a life long career. Now, with help from a few good friends, I restore, refurbish and custom-make purses and clothing.
Samson Industries clothing has been independently owned and operated since November 2003. This, I couldn't have done without the physical presence of my husband, son (Jessiah), my mom's support and my good friend Kris' (K.B.) constant push.
This clothing line is in dedication to my late father.
Why Samson?
My family name Meaning - Like the sun
As I sat night after night wondering what I should call the clothing line, it dawned on me...what a better way to keep my father's memory alive. Most of you have probably heard of Samson's story in the book of Judges chapter 13-16.
If you haven't, it is a true story about a man who had a God given talent of superhuman strength. He revealed that his source of strength was in his SEVEN locks of hair. Inspite of Samson's failures, he is listed among the great heroes of faith, once he finally realized his total dependence on God and called upon Him in his last act of valor.
Our clothing will reflect Samson's significance without forgetting our roots and the colors of our life.
In My Dreams... We cannot erase poverty but we can embrace it. Ongoing projects like these open that door so they may come to know that they have talents far beyond what they can fathom. "Gawad Kalinga (GK) , translated in English means “to give care", is an alternative solution to the blatant problem of poverty not just in the Philippines but the world. Its approach is integrated, holistic and sustainable – a concrete action plan to rebuild".
ANCOP offices have been set up in 20 donor areas abroad as the fundraising and sponsor relations arm of Gawad Kalinga. Who is ANCOP? The network of international organizations that support the work of Gawad Kalinga in the Philippines and other Third World countries.
Future: To build a place of work in these villages with fair wages in a safe & healthy work environment. Most importantly, to provide them a place to freely worship.
How: Since we are still a small company, a percentage of each purchase will be set aside toward the building of this project. To learn more: www.gawadkalinga.org
